The history of Francis Coppola’s struggles to achieve award-winning success as a filmmaker and a winemaker have been well documented for more than five decades. But just as harsh conditions draw out the best fruit from a vine, a lifetime of adversity has extracted every ounce of the creativity that lives inside Mr. Coppola. Through his movies and his wines, he continues to express his passion for pushing the boundaries of the imagination—and he continues to inspire others to do the same.
Born to a family of Italian immigrants in Detroit, Michigan.
Contracts Polio and is bedridden for a few years. He makes the most of his free time by watching television and creating homemade puppet theater productions.
Enrolls in UCLA Film School.
Directs The Godfather, which is nominated for 11 Academy awards and goes on to be widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made.
Purchases the Inglenook Winery.
Files for bankruptcy a third time.
The Coppola family purchases the historic Chateau Souverain property in Sonoma County.
The winery is unveiled with its newly renovated tasting room, museum, and Rustic, Francis’s Favorites restaurant.

Like a film, a wine has a beginning, a middle and an end. It’s a story written by the sun and the soil; the vines and vintner; the barrels and the bottles. It’s a craft that requires patience, perseverance and a willingness to experiment with new ideas and techniques to create something truly memorable. The same determination that drove Francis Coppola to inspire the world through his motion pictures compelled him to reward likeminded dreamers with his wines.
